The Flower Mound High School [FMHS] Interact Club is ensuring needy families will have a proper Thanksgiving this year.
Flower Mound Rotarian and FMHS Interact Sponsor James Benton said the Flower Mound Rotary Club sponsors the service club, but are run by the students.
"This is not adult driven –– this is all student driven," he said.
The group’s first project of the school year is the "Basket Brigade" and will assemble bags providing the essentials for a Thanksgiving meal with all of the trimmings.
"Interact students at FMHS have organized themselves into different task teams," Benton said. "One team is in charge of all the canned and dry foods for the baskets."
He added that Interact students joined up with the National Honor Society and Student Council to turn the service project into a school-wide event.
"There is already a mountain of cans dispersed among different classrooms at the high school," he said.
"I feel like we are the only organization reaching out to the community in this way," Peter Kim, Interact vice president said. "A lot of organizations raise money for donations, [but] this is a project that will have a direct impact on the community."
Benton said the Interact Club received a list of families in need from Christian Community Action [CCA] and will deliver the packaged Thanksgiving feast in person on Nov. 22.
Benton said Interact organized the second annual "Turkey Drop Off" with the Blue Bonnet Elementary School staff and families on Friday, Nov. 21. It is expected that about 300 turkeys will be received with up to 150 of the turkeys added to the Interact food baskets. The remaining donated turkeys will be used for other CCA client families.
"This is important," FMHS Interact Secretary Sonya Chung said. "We are delivering food to people who might not have had a Thanksgiving meal otherwise."
