Take time from all your holiday activities to write a letter to Santa — even if you don’t have young children or don’t celebrate Christmas.
The last time I had space to run my column — three weeks ago — it was Halloween and I wrote about how fast the time flies from that holiday to Thanksgiving, Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa and Hijra-Muharram [Islam’s first day of new year]. I think I’ve covered all my bases.
Marsha Gavitt, director of the Voters United to Preserve Flower Mound, said during the public participation section of the July 21 Flower Mound Town Council meeting that citizens are drifting from SMARTGrowth, Master Plan and protective ordinances. The subject of her statement was incorrect in a July 25 article, "Heated Topics." In addition, the article misrepresented statements by Gavitt and Rebecca Belcher, president of Flower Mound Citizens Against Urban Drilling. Gavitt advised against "inappropriate interactions" with members of the town’s Oil and Gas Board of Appeals before they vote. Belcher said it is not the community’s responsibility to "ensure profits for developers who make poor business decisions."
The Flower Mound Town Council should support the decision of the Oil and Gas Board of Appeals, rendered on June 18, to deny Red Oak Gas Company’s variance requests.

Dear Editor:
I am a non-smoker; I quit January 1, 1969. However, that doesn’t mean that I want the State of Texas to tell adult citizens whether and where they can smoke. For Memorial Day this year, the Flower Mound High School JROTC, Cub Scout Pack 290 and Boy Scout Troop 451 will combine to mark the graves at three cemeteries with American flags: the Flower Mound Cemetery, the Shiloh Cemetery and the Chinn Chapel Cemetery.

What can we do as a community? Flower Mound has a population of about 61,000. With more than 28 percent of that population being under age 15, we pride ourselves on being a family-oriented, kid-friendly community. Flower Mound has many nice parks throughout the town, but I think we can do better.
